The seemingly magical effect of an afternoon siesta on work/study

We used to do this a lot when we were kids but I never imagined that in my adult life I would look forward to them as much as I do!

I had stopped taking naps when I finished my high school boarding days. And even then I only took them because I was extremely exhausted after working so hard studying, doing chores around the school and being mentally drained by demanding academicians at the high school I attended (lol my high school years were rough!)

Never in my dreams did I imagine that I would revisit them in my adult life while pursuing a masters' degree in China. Hoohhf!

In parts of China lunch breaks in offices and institutions go for about 2 hours. This is to give time for people to eat and also provide an opportunity for a highly encouraged short nap before going back to work (or school in my case).

Shocking right?...and beautiful!!

Here's why. That little nap my darling was like a shot of something really potent straight to where it was needed. It would take away all the weariness I had stocked up from working my brain hard to learn Chinese in those 4 morning hours of zero-English Chinese lectures (yes zero English and yes they were tough! But... also extremely effective. You can ask all the language students who took my classes in present day. They can tell you! lol)

But I digress. Back to the matter of today's story time.

A short 30 minute nap later worked like a thing of wonder!!

From there on post nap afternoon lectures were no longer characterized by my nodding head fighting to stay alert at the back of the class. I felt fresher than a just bloomed daisy and was taking in my Chinese professors' classes with more life in me and with better retention!

It was surprising to find that naps had such a wondrous effect for my adult well being!

Even after coming back home from China, I still apply this nap culture from time to time. And I find that my skin gets healthier for it, I am even more productive afterward, and my head is less stressed working in the afternoons. Absolutely makes the work day a more enjoyable experience.

So how about you? Are you thinking of reducing the level of stress and weariness from your work/study day? Do you have trouble keeping focus during afternoon work/study sessions? I'd give a thought to considering an afternoon siesta. It delivers some amazing results.

Always cheering for your happiness,

Cathy 💚
